Ørjan Sveberg Posted 2 October, 2023 Share Posted 2 October, 2023 Hi. Is there anyone from Norway here that can tell me the experience they have had with paying taxes on casino winnings when you live in Norway? I recently won a bit, from a online casino based in Malta, and im not sure how this works. It says online that taxes shouldn't be paid from an EØS country, is that correct? Do you report your winnings, and what is your past experience with this? Quote Link to comment
sirbuzzk Posted 2 October, 2023 Share Posted 2 October, 2023 When it comes to Norway the rules are currently unclear and a bit hard to know what's relevant unfortunately. From what I understand Norway itself consider any single win (Not session, but single poker hand/slot win/roulette round) over 10.000 NOK is taxable. On the other side Norway have agreed to certain international business terms as part of its EU relationship and Maltese online casinos argue that it should therefor be not required to pay taxes. Its an ongoing case with Kindred and Lottstift I believe which might be worth following. 1 Quote Link to comment
Ørjan Sveberg Posted 2 October, 2023 Author Share Posted 2 October, 2023 i really appreciate the reply. Does anyone have any genuine experience on reporting or not reporting the winnings? I dont want to pay taxes if i dont have to, and the rules are so unclear... Quote Link to comment
Smurfen76 Posted 24 October, 2023 Share Posted 24 October, 2023 Well this used to be the correct answer 🤔 So i only play on casinos that are registerd on Malta just to be safe,i have never had any tax problems so far 👍🙏 " Gambling winnings that occur within the EEA area are exempt from tax. This applies both on and off the internet. To determine where a gambling site on the internet is considered to belong, the Tax Authorities make an overall assessment, where they look, among other things, at whether the gambling site has a license from an area within the EEA, and where the owners of the site are from. An example of the area that is part of the EEA is Sweden, Great Britain, Malta, Åland, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Estonia and Latvia. Examples of areas that are not part of the EEA are the Isle of Man, Alderney, Kahnawake, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Curaçao, Belize and Costa Rica."
